DMS Student Spotlight

Davis Wells

Davis Wells is a second-year Bachelor of Management student, majoring in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and pursuing a certificate in Managerial Accounting. Originally from Toronto, Davis was drawn to Dal due to its proximity to the ocean and the opportunity to experience life in a new province. Excited by the chance to grow both personally and academically, Davis began researching programs and while initially considering Commerce, she was quickly drawn towards the Management program instead. “As soon as I saw the words Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Management program, I was hooked and applied right away,” she explains, adding that she loves the variety of courses offered by the program. Getting to learn about many different subjects that all eventually tie together has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the program. “I also love the variety of major options to choose from—it gives you the flexibility to tailor your education to your interests.”

In addition to learning from her courses, Davis is looking forward to participating in the optional 8-month internship program offered for Management students after their third year. “The hands-on learning would be incredibly beneficial for my future and help me better understand what I want to do post-graduation.” The ability to gain relevant, paid work experience during her degree is exciting, and offers “a great chance to network and build connections in the industry.” This is especially important for Davis, who plans to pursue a Master of Business Administration in the future.

Getting involved in extracurricular life and contributing to the school community has always been important to Davis, so getting involved with the Dalhousie Management Society was a priority for her even in her first year. Starting out as a first-year representative, Davis is now the Co-VP of Marketing for the society, and loves making a difference for other students in the program. “Being part of the Management Society has allowed me to create amazing memories, try new things, and meet people who have made a lasting impact on my life.” She is a strong advocate for getting involved and participating in extracurriculars. In addition to meeting lifelong friends, being active in the society has allowed Davis to improve her professional skills. “My role has also provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in marketing—skills and insights I couldn’t gain solely from a classroom setting.”

Now nearly halfway through her degree, Davis is loving the close-knit feel of the program, getting to learn about a wide variety of subjects, and creating a positive community for Management students through her work with the Dalhousie Management society.

Cole Noble

As a second-year student, Cole Noble chose to pursue higher education at Dalhousie largely for the chance to live in the city of Halifax. From Bathurst, a small town in New Brunswick, living in a bigger city with more opportunities appealed to him. “I've always enjoyed the city of Halifax, and in my opinion, there isn't a better mix of city and community.” Although he was originally enrolled in the Applied Computer Science program, Cole switched to the Management program in his second year. After attending an information session about pursuing a certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, he realized his passion for the subject and took action to switch it from a certificate to his major. The unique structure of the program has allowed him to develop his thinking and improve many skills. “My favourite aspect of the management program is the way they promote outside-of-the-box and logical thinking, which is something you don't get to experiment with in many other programs.”

Cole is currently a second-year representative for the Dalhousie Management Society, which has been instrumental in building his community of peers in the program. This semester, he took on the task of designing unique pins as merchandise for the society. Perfect for adorning backpacks or lapels, these pins showcase the society and allow Management students to show their pride. In addition to his experience with the Dalhousie Management Society, Cole has taken the initiative to compete in two case competitions throughout his university career. Each of these experiences allowed him to develop his teamwork and problem-solving skills. “While the experience of presenting to people you don't know can be scary, the personal and professional development you gain from the experience is worth it 100%.” Taking the risk to expand his horizons gave him the opportunity to greatly increase his skills and professionalism.

In addition to his academic endeavours, Cole has also had the opportunity to work directly in the field of technology at a technology service firm in his hometown. “I got to be a solutions analyst where my responsibilities were to analyze problems clients were facing and offer solutions.” This experience expanded his ability to think logically and find unique solutions to difficult problems. In addition to this job, Cole started his own business, one that offered security systems and technology consultation to local businesses. By embarking on this entrepreneurial venture, Cole was able to expand his professional network and learn from the practical, real-world experience. He plans to expand his entrepreneurial experience by completing an Entrepreneurial Work Term as part of the Management Internship Program. “There's no better experience than working hands-on in industries where you may find a career.”

Charly Davies

Charly Davies is a fourth-year Bachelor of Management student majoring in Public Sector Management and pursuing a minor in Economics. She is looking forward to graduation in the Spring, and plans to continue her education in the next five to ten years by pursuing her Master of Business Administration or Master of Public Administration. However, she is looking forward to starting her career and getting some more work experience under her belt before returning to the classroom.

Originally from Innisfil, Ontario, Charly fell in love with the East Coast from an early age during family trips to Prince Edward Island. When the time came to choose a university, she knew she wanted to attend one in Atlantic Canada. “From a young age I always knew that I wanted to eventually move out East.” Dalhousie offered unique programs and a bigger campus than most other universities in the Atlantic provinces, while still keeping class sizes on the small side. In addition, the city of Halifax appealed to Charly for its vibrant downtown life and proximity to stunning beaches. Life at Dalhousie and in Halifax provided the perfect school-life balance that Charly was looking for.

Although she initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts, Charly quickly realized that the Bachelor of Management program was the one for her. The small size of the program was attractive to her, with smaller classes and a greater ability to get to know professors. Additionally, the diverse courses provided the opportunity to become well-rounded on a variety of subjects and keep learning interesting. The Management program also offered the unique 8-month internship opportunity, which drew Charly to the program. When starting university, Charly initially thought she wanted to pursue a career in law but discovered through the internship program that she has other aspirations. The 8-month work term gave her the opportunity to gain real-world experience while earning money to support her degree. “I viewed the optional internship as not an option because it’s such a great opportunity for growth and experience, so why wouldn’t I jump on that?”

Charly completed her 8-month internship with Agenda Managers, a small company in Halifax that specializes in corporate event management. In her work as Events Support Coordinator, Charly was able to explore different aspects of the business, thanks to the small team. “In a small business you are able to work on a range of areas from accounting to marketing to customer service.” This allowed her to gain a diverse portfolio of skills, with an emphasis on communication and time management. Frequent communication with clients, partners, and colleagues was a huge part of Charly’s role, and taught her how be professional and concise when conveying information. Additionally, she strengthened her time management skills, as she was responsible for multiple events and projects at once. “I learned how to prioritize tasks and my time to ensure that I met deadlines and paid attention to all the events on the go.” These will be valuable skills Charly will carry with her in her future career and professional endeavours.
